PhD in TRANSLATIONAL CANINE NEURO-IMMUNOLOGY: INVESTIGATING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM IN CANINE GLIOMA AND MENINGOENCEPHALITIS OF UNKNOWN ORIGIN at the UNIVERSITY OF LIVERPOOL
We invite applications for a fully-funded PhD studentship in veterinary neuroscience at the University of Liverpool, commencing on / after January 2026.
Background: The immune system plays a pivotal role in neurological conditions including brain tumours and inflammatory conditions.
The immune system has important roles in brain cancer progression and resistance to traditional therapies, and is now being harnessed in emerging glioma therapies. Gliomas in dogs are emerging as a human neuro-oncological model, having already been successfully leveraged in the development of several immunotherapies for human patient use.1 The immune landscape and tumour microenvironment (TME) of glioma in dogs display considerable overlap with human glioma.1,2 Both influxes of inflammatory anti-tumour calls (neutrophils, M1 macrophages) and anti-inflammatory cells (regulatory T cells, M2 macrophages) were seen, resulting in decreases in key anti-tumour effector cells (CD8+ lymphocytes, T follicular helper cells). However, a considerable knowledge gap remains in our understanding of the canine glioma TME. Furthermore, traditional cell quantification techniques (i.e. flow cytometry) are antibody-dependent. This limits direct translation between species (e.g. human and canine), and antibody binding prevents certain additional analyses of the isolated cell populations.
MUO is one of the most common brain diseases of dogs, consisting of various, apparently immune-mediated, encephalitides (GME, NME, NLE, etc.) that show similarities to human autoimmune encephalitis and multiple sclerosis. The condition remains fatal in around one-third of affected dogs. Our recent research has evaluated biomarkers for use in MUO and we have developed a useful clinical outcome measure, the Neuro-Disability Scale (NDS), that is associated with 6-month survival, persistent neurological impairment and relapse.3,4 Similarly, lesion loads on MRI (T2 and T1 post-contrast) were associated with decreasing survival and increasing relapse, respectively.5 Current knowledge gaps in MUO include optimal therapy, and how to prognosticate and personalize treatment for patients at increased risk. Further, CSF analysis plays a major role in the diagnosis of MUO, but is currently limited to traditional analysis including cytology, and may represent a missed opportunity in ante-mortem evaluation. The aetiology, ante-mortem diagnosis of sub-type (GME, NME, etc.), the prognostication and the quantification of treatment response are all in need of major improvement.
Project aims: The aims of this PhD studentship are to answer some of these important questions by investigating the immune system in canine glioma and MUO; and ultimately, alongside evaluation of clinical outcome measures and other biomarkers, to improve diagnosis and treatment of these conditions and provide insights into disease pathogenesis.
Project outline: Utilizing peripheral blood, CSF, surgical and post-mortem tissue we will compare immuno-analyses with established techniques such as flow cytometry, RNA-seq, MRI, pathology and clinical pathology, and outcome analyses. Outcome analyses will be developed, including establishing or modifying the NDS in brain tumour cases, and caregiver tools.
The anticipated outputs of this study include tools to assess disease burden in canine brain tumours and MUO, including expansion of the NDS, MRI radiomics, and immuno-analyses of peripheral blood or CSF. There may be potential to develop an antibody-free alternative to flow cytometry.
The study of canine glioma could lead to the detection of translational immunological treatment targets, for future study in canine and human patients. The study of MUO could lead to improvements in diagnosis, disease subtyping or outcome analysis. The immuno-analyses could provide insights into the aetio-pathogenesis of these diseases. Ultimately this study could provide impact through improved care for veterinary patients and humans with related disorders.
Further details: The student will be embedded in the clinical small animal neurology team at Liverpool’s Small Animal Teaching Hospital and research laboratories based at Leahurst campus (on the Wirral), as well as working within the Technology, Infrastructure and Environment Directorate on the main University of Liverpool campus. Membership of the University of Liverpool Brain Cancer group is encouraged.
A diverse range of highly translatable skills will be gained by participation in this studentship, including skills relating to clinical veterinary neurology, clinical research, benchtop research and translational canine–human research.

The Ralph is the UK’s largest independent (non-corporate) multidisciplinary specialist referral centre in southeast England with ~250 Ralphers. We are looking for a Senior Neurology and Neurosurgery clinician to join our friendly, collaborative team as one of our existing team members from abroad is moving back home with their family.
We are open to full-time and part-time applicants and to discussing different part-time working patterns. We will consider Diplomates and Residency-trained board-eligible candidates. Significant experience in neurosurgery is not mandatory, as we are happy to provide all the necessary training.
Our large team currently consists of five ECVN Diplomates, three ECVN Residents, three Vet Interns and our four fabulous Neurology nurses!
At The Ralph, you will have access to advanced neurodiagnostic equipment, including 1.5T MRI, CT, fluoroscopy, electrodiagnostic unit (with capability for EMG, sensory and motor nerve conduction studies, BAER and video EEG) and a vast array of neurosurgical equipment including a pedicle screws and rods stabilisation system. We have a highly varied caseload of medical and surgical neurological cases with exposure to various advanced neurosurgical procedures.
In our specialist-led multidisciplinary environment, you will also receive full support from Diplomates in many disciplines. These include Anaesthesia and Analgesia, Cardiology, Dentistry, Diagnostic Imaging, Internal Medicine, Oncology, Ophthalmology, and Orthopaedic and Soft Tissue Surgery. Our Neurology service works very closely with our excellent Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation team. Our hospital also has a 24-7-365 Diplomate-led Emergency and Critical Care service. This allows us to provide specialist care, including mechanical ventilation, to acute and critical patients at any time.
Our ideal candidate's winning traits include dedication to patients, a positive attitude toward teamwork, a willingness to teach, and a cheerful, friendly character.
We offer a competitive package of salary and other benefits, including generous holiday and CPD allowance, employee share options, and private medical insurance.
Full-time is four days per week. Our current clinician team works with a shared on-call rota covering weekends and Bank Holidays. The weekend on-call rota is one weekend in five, either as primary or backup for the residents, with support from our interns and service-specific nurses. During the week, our Emergency and Critical Care team are responsible for admitting neuroemergencies Out of Hours.
Marlow is located on the River Thames between Henley and Windsor. This is a beautiful area with lovely walks, water-based activities and more. Our hospital is just off the A404, with easy access from the M4 and M40 motorways, and close to London. Marlow is conveniently located only 25 minutes from Heathrow Airport, 45 minutes from Luton Airport and one hour from Gatwick or Stansted Airport. This location makes it very convenient for weekend getaways or for our European colleagues to ‘pop back’ to their home countries to visit friends and family.
The Ralph workplace focuses on core values, culture, vision and mission. We emphasise kindness, compassion and empathy for all our communities. As an independent hospital, we have the freedom and flexibility to chart our course. We would love to hear from you if you want to know more.
For more information on the position, please contact Lorenzo Mari (Head of Neurology & Neurosurgery) at lorenzo.mari@theralph.vet. You are welcome to get in touch for an informal and confidential chat.
