Neurology-Neurosurgery Residency at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London

Closing date: Sunday, 6th January 2019 Interview date: Tuesday, 12th February 2019

Our clinical training residency in veterinary neurology and neurosurgery is a three-year program satisfying the training requirements needed to attain specialist certification in the European College of Veterinary Neurology.

The programme has a strong emphasis on clinical neurology and neurosurgery, and you will have primary case responsibility for a large and varied caseload. The clinical training program is well supported by five Neurology faculty members (including four Diplomates of the ECVN), four other Residents, one rotating Small Animal intern, a team of dedicated neurology and rehabilitation nurses, a veterinary physiotherapist and final-year veterinary students on rotation. Specialists in internal medicine, orthopaedic and soft-tissue surgery, emergency medicine and critical care, cardiology, oncology, anaesthesia, ophthalmology, dermatology, radiology and pathology also support the program.

Clinical work is mainly with our small animal caseload in the QMHA, though our service does consult on neurological cases in the Equine Referral Hospital and for the Farm Animal Service. You will also participate in an out of hours on-call rota for neurological and neurosurgical emergencies. Facilities include on-site MRI (1.5T Philips), 320 slice computed tomography, fluoroscopy, wireless EEG system, recently upgraded neurosurgical facilities including an Ultrasonic Surgical System, Brainsight neuronavigation system, Viking electrodiagnostic system, a large purpose-built ICU, and a physiotherapy unit with hydrotherapy pool and an underwater-treadmill staffed by a veterinary physiotherapist and dedicated nurses.

Excellence in teaching and clinical research is also emphasised, with structured time off clinics allowed for study and the completion of research projects. The program includes regular clinical rounds, neuropathology rounds, journal club and resident seminar series.
